THINGS EVERY PARENT HAS A RIGHT TO EXPECT OF HIS CHILDREN

Introduction:
  I. Discussed in last week's lesson some things every 
     child has a right to expect of his parents.
 II. In this lesson, turning to the matter around.
III. Here are some things every parent has a right to 
     expect of his children.
Body:
  I. Parents have a right to expect obedience and respect.
     A. Ephesians 6:1-3.
     B. Luke 2:51.
     C. Terrible to hear a child talk back to parents, and 
        refuse to be submissive to them.
     D. 1 Timothy 5:1-2; 2 Timothy 3:1-5; Romans 1:29-32.
 II. Parents have a right to expect their children to 
     uphold good name.
     A. Characteristics of good name-
        1. Proverbs 22:1
        2. So difficult to obtain - so easy to lose.
           a. Illustration - Rolling stone up mountain.
           b. Psalms 69:12
     B. Child who inherits from his parents a good name is 
        fortunate indeed.
        1. Children have suffered untold misery because of 
           their parents.
        2. My parents could leave me no money, but when 
           they pass they will leave me that which is more 
           valuable than money.
     C. But they have a right to expect me to uphold it.
        1. When you think of Samuel - Great man - 1 Samuel 
           12:1-5 - But can't think of Samuel without 
           remembering his sons.
        2. Likewise with Eli.
        3. Good men suffer hurt because there are primarily 
           known as _________'s father.
III. Parents have a right to expect their children to 
     accept certain responsibilities relative to the home.
     A. Matthew 21:28-30.  Reasonable request on father's 
        part.
     B. Parents not out of line when they expect you to 
        spilt stove wood, milk cows, pick cotton, slop the 
        hogs - No really, you have it pretty easy.
     C. When they ask you to mow the grass, rake leaves, 
        wash dishes, sweep and dust, etc., do it cheerfully 
-	that's a mighty small thing.
 IV. Parents have a right to expect trustworthiness of 
     their children.
     A. Ephesians 4:25; Revelations 21:8.
     B. When young person says "I'm going to such and such 
        a place, will be home by 11:00," parent should be 
        able to trust him.
     C. Or when explaining some incident in which you are
        involved.
     D. If you have not been trust-worthy in past, you must 
        understand that only time and absolute truth can 
        restore that lost confidence.
  V. Parents have the right to expect from their children 
     help in maintaining a peaceful atmosphere in the home.
     A. Proverbs 15:17.
     B. Cannot believe that the Lord is pleased when our 
        homes are centers of turmoil, fussing, and hatred 
        rather than centers of peace, tranquility, and 
        love.
     C. Each should ask himself, "Am I part of the problem 
        Or the solution to the problem."
 VI. Parents have a right to expect apologies and request 
     for forgiveness when children wrong them.
     A. I suppose no child grows up without doing some 
        things that he regrets and that hurt his parents.
     B. But, there are those who when they make their 
        mistakes, apologize and make it right.
     C. Prodigal son. Luke 15:11-24.
     D. Perhaps there is a need for home discussions 
        tonight in which all parties admit wrongs and ask 
        forgiveness.
