THE CHRISTIAN RACE

Text: Hebrews 12:1-2
Introduction:
 I. The Olympics
    A. One winner
    B. Start at same time
    C. Can see the finish line.
II. The Christian’s life is compared to a race.
    A. Many winners (all CAN be).
    B. Start at different times.
    C. We cannot see the finish line.
Body:
  I. We must abide by the rulebook.
     A. Jesus is the rule maker. Hebrews 1:1-2
     B. The Bible (New Testament) is our rulebook.
        1. 2 Timothy 3:16-17.
        2. Romans 7:1-6.
        3. Ephesians 2:13-16.
        4. Colossians 3:14-17.
     C. We cannot change it.
     D. What the rules tell us to do.
        1. How to start the race.
        2. Open to all. Revelation 22:17
        3. Must be in Christ. Galatians 3:27; Romans 6:3
        4. How to run the race.  2 Timothy 3:16-17
 II. There will be a judge. 2 Timothy 4:8
     A. He knows the rules.
     B. He is a just judge. John 5:28-30
     C. We will be judged on… Revelation 20:12; John 12:48
III. There are different kinds of runners.
     A. Those who are running on the wrong track.
        1. Good moral people. Acts 11:14 (Cornelius)
        2. Vain religion. Matthew 15:8-9; 7:21-23
        3. Those who keep putting it off.
        4. Excuse makers.
           a. I can’t make it.
           b. Too many hypocrites…
           c. Will not accept the rules.
     B. Those who started running on the right track but 
        will not finish.
        1. Resting (left the church)
        2. Hypocrite
        3. World lover
        4. Lukewarm
     C. Those who started running on the right track and
        finish.
        1. Weak (but trying to do what is right)
        2. Zealous
           a. Like those in Acts 8:4.
           b. Laodiceans who were told to be zealous.
              Revelation 3:19
        3. Faithful
           a. Example of Stephen, Paul, etc.
           b. Revelation 2:10
 IV. There will be a reward.
     A. The reward for those who don’t finish the race.
        1. John 5:28-29
        2. Revelation 20:15
        3. Mark 9:45-46
     B. The reward for those who do finish the race.
        1. John 5:28-29
        2. 1 Peter 1:3-4
        3. James 1:12
        4. Revelation 21:4
Conclusion:
 I. Have you gotten started on the right track for this 
    race?
    A. If not, you need to get started now because you
       might not have another opportunity.
    B. The way to get started is:
       1. Believe – Mark 16:16; Acts 2:36
       2. Repent (change of mind or purpose) – Acts 2:38
       3. Confess your faith in Jesus – Romans 10:9-10
       4. Be baptized for the remission of your sins – Mark 
          16:16; Acts 2:38; 22:16; Romans 6:3-4
II. Have you gotten started on the right track but have
    stopped running the race?
    A. If so, you need to start running the race again now
       because you might not have another opportunity.
    B. The way to restart running the race is to repent,
       confess, and pray for forgiveness.
       1. Acts 8:22
       2. 1 John 1:9
