BY WHAT AUTHORITY ARE INSTRUMENTS OF MUSIC USED?

Introduction:
  I. Bible teaches that one must have authority for all he does in
     religion.
     A. Colossians 3:17.
     B. 2 John 9.
     C. 2 Peter 4:11.
     D. Revelations 22:18-19.
     E. Matthew 7:21-23.
II. Because we need authority, we inquire of these who use instruments
of music by what authority they do so.
III. There are four answers commonly given, so we will examine these
     answers in our lesson today.
Body:
  I. They are used in heaven.
     A. Revelations 14:2. (Not every thing in heaven is the way that it
        is to be on earth.)
     B. Mark 12:25 - Hebrews 13:4.
II. David used instruments of music; therefore, it is right for us to
     use them today.
     A. Cannot question David's use of them. Psalm 150
     B. But, David also burned incense, offered animal sacrifices, kept
the Sabbath, and had a plurality of wives - If his action justifies
        one, it justifies all.
     C. David lived in a completely different age under a different law from
        us.
        1. Romans 7:4
        2. Galatians 3:24-25.
        3. Colossians 2:14.
III. Instruments are but aids - similar to songbooks; lights; benches; etc.
     (baptistery).
     A. Important to distinguish between an aid, authorized within a command,
and an addition to the command.
     B. Examples:

Command

Aid

Addition

1. Gen. 6:14. Make ark  (Kind of
    structure specified)

     C.	Principle:
        1. Where God has not specified details within a command, the details are
left to human judgment. These details are authorized within the command.
        2. Where God has specified details, there is no room for human judgment,
but man is limited to that specified. If man goes beyond to do that which
is in addition to what God has specified, he sins. 2 John 9; Col. 3:17; etc.
     D. Col. 3:16; Eph. 5:19
