What Is the Second Death?

Introduction:  This is a subject that we do not hear much about.
Body:
I. What is the Second Death?
   A. What is death?
      1. Thanatos (qanatos) a. the separation of the soul (the 
         spiritual part of man) from the body (the material 
         part)...(b). the separation of man from God. Vine.
      2. Death; 1. prop. the death of the body, i.e., that 
         separation...of the soul from the body by which the 
         life on earth is ended.
      3. Illus. James 2:26.
      4. Hebrews 9:27.
   B. What is the Second Death?
      1. Scriptures:
         a. Revelation 20:14.
         b. Revelation 21:8.
      2. A description of this place.
         a. Revelation 21:8; 20:14, 10.
         b. Matthew 8:12; 25:30.
           (1) Outer darkness.
           (2) Weeping and gnashing of teeth.
         c. Matthew 25:46, 41.
         d. Mark 9:42-48.
      3. Who will suffer this second death?  Revelation 20:15; 
         21:8 (1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Galatians 5:19-21).
         a. Fearful - cowardly, timid. Vine.
            cowards or apostates who deny Christ in persecution 
            and worship of Caesar...It embraces further all 
            those who draw back under general ridicule and 
            social pressure.  Expositor's Greek Testament. 
            p. 481.
         b. Unbelieving -
            (1) without faith or trust; 1. unfaithful, 
                faithless (not to be trusted) Thayer
            (2) The unbelieving are those who have betrayed 
                trust committed to them (cf. Luke 12:46) by 
                their lives and conduct they have denied the 
                Lord. Hailey
         c. Abominable -
            (1) a foul thing, detestable thing in O. T. often 
                used of idols & things pertaining to idolatry.

            (2) Akin to (bdeluktos) which is said of deceivers 
                who profess to know God, but deny Him by their 
                works and akin to (bdelusso) to render foul, to 
                cause to be abhorred hence to detest.  Denotes 
                an object of disgust.  Vine.
            (3) All whose conduct is offense to God.  Woods
            (4) Those who become morally or spiritual foul.

            (5) Those who were defiled by heathen practices.

	 d. Murders -
            (1) to kill, slay, murder.  Thayer
            (2) I John 3:14-15; 4:8, 12 - I Corinthians 13:4-7.
         e. Fornicators -
            (1) a man who indulges in unlawful sexual intercourse.  
                Thayer
            (2) Sexual immoral.  Hailey
         f. Sorcerers -
            (1) Devoted to magical arts, a sorcerer, especially 
                one who uses drugs, potions, spells, enchantments.
                Vine
            (2) Those who deal with the occult.
            (3) In sorcery, the use of drugs, whether simple or 
                potent, was generally accompanied by incantations 
                and appeals to occult powers, with the provision 
                of various charms, amulets, etc., professedly 
                designed to keep the applicant or patient from 
                the attention and power of demons, but actually 
                to impress the applicant with the mysterious 
                resources and powers of the sorcerer.
         g. Idolaters -
            (1) A worshiper of false gods, an idolater.
            (2) Ephesians 5:5.
            (3) Any thing that is number one in our life instead 
                of God.
         h. Liars -
            (1) lying, deceitful, false.  Thayer
            (2) those who practice all that is deceitful or false.

II. How can we avoid suffering this second death?
    A. The non-Christian.
       1. Mark 16:16
       2. Acts 2:36-38.
       3. Romans 10:9-10; 6:3-4.
       4. 1 Peter 3:20-21.
    B. The Christian.
       1. I John 1:7-9.
       2. Acts 8:22-24.
       3. Revelation 2:10.
Conclusion: If you were to die this afternoon, would you suffer 
the second death?
