What is Man?

Introduction: One of the oldest questions the philosophers have
tried to answer is “what is man?” Since we believe the Bible
has all the answers (that we need to know) to all questions, let
us turn to the Bible and let the Bible answer this question,
“what is man?”
Body:
  I. Man is not an accident of nature.
     A. There are those who believe that man is an accident of
        nature.
        1. Talk about evolution.
        2. Reasons why to one should not believe in evolution.
           a. Where did matter come from?
           b. Nature:
              (1) Including the universe.
              (2) The Young Earth (Some state that man has been
on earth for 2-3 million years or more.)
              (3) The Population Statistics - If man had lived
only a million years there would be an earthly
population of 1 x 105000! The known universe
                  can hold only 1 x 10100.
              (4) The Breakdown of the Earth’s Magnetic Field.
By this dating, the earth is 10,000 years old.
              (5) Shrinkage of the Sun. Any evolution that took
place more than 20 million years ago would
have taken place inside of the sun. A 100,000
years ago, the sun would be twice its size.
           c. Unity of the Bible.
     B. The Bible teaches that man is not an accident of nature.
        1. Acts 17:24-27, 28, 29
        2. Psalms 100:3
        3. Ecclesiastes 12:1
II. There is more to man than meets the eye.
     A. Matthew 10:28
     B. Genesis 1:26-27
     C. 1 Corinthians 2:11
III. Man is a sinner. Romans 3:23
     A. Calvinism teaches that man has no freedom of choice
(that the reason why man is a sinner is that he is so
total depraved that man cannot choose to do right of his
        own free will).
     B. What does the Bible teach.
        1. God is concerned for all sinners. 1 Timothy 2:4
        2. God has always had a law.
           a. In the garden of Eden.
           b. after the Fall.
           c. The Law of Moses.
           d. The Law of Christ.
        3. Man is doing to be held accountable for either
keeping or not keeping the law under which he has
           lived.
           a. 2 Corinthians 5:10
           b. Romans 14:10
           c. Revelation 20:12
        4. A couple of examples:
           a. Matthew 23:37
           b. Acts 13:42-45, 46
        5. Unless we receive forgiveness of our sins, we will be
           lost eternally.
        6. To receive forgiveness we must:
           a. Mark 16:16
           b. Acts 2:36-28, 41.
