WALKING WITH GOD

Text: Genesis 5:24
Introduction:
  I. How much is said in so few words.
 II. Those who are greatest in God’s sight are not 
     necessarily the ones who are most talked about. 
     Hebrews 11:5; Jude 14-15
III. Passage suggests: harmony, agreement, concord, 
     fellowship, and companionship.
 IV. Example of Adam – Genesis 3:8.
  V. Christians enjoy the fellowship, companionship of God.
     A. Children of Promise – Galatians 4:28; Heirs Romans 
        8:17.
     B. Address God as Father.
     C. 1 Peter 3:12; 5:7; Hebrews 4:14-16
     D. Spiritual communion – Matthew 18:20; 26:29; Hebrews
        2:12.
     E. Like Adam – Sin separates.  Isaiah 59:2
Body:
  I. Cannot walk with God unless there is agreement.
     A. Amos 3:3
     B. 2 Corinthians 6:14-16
 II. In this connection, Isaiah makes a statement which
     raises two questions.
     A. Isaiah 55:8-9
        1. Shall God leave His way and walk with us, or..
        2. shall we have ours ways and walk with God?
        3. Note: “Enoch walked with God.”
     B. Jeremiah 10:23
     C. Proverbs 14:12
     D. We must then change our ways to harmonize, agree, 
        etc. with God’s way if we walk Him and thus enjoy 
        His fellowship, companion, etc.
III. The Standard by which we may know whether or not we 
     are walking with God is His word.
     A. “Walking with God” suggests friendship. John 15:14
     B. To walk with God is to know God.  1 John 2:3-4
     C. To walk with God is to love God. John 14:21-23
     D. To walk with God is to love the brethren. 1 John 
        5:2-3
     E. Man cannot walk with God and compose himself with
        himself or with other Christians.
        1. 2 Corinthians 10:12, 17-18
        2. 1 Corinthians 4:6
     G. Man cannot walk with God and compare ourselves with
        our religious neighbors.
        1. Children of Israel is an example – “give us a
           king like all the nations” – 1 Samuel 8:5-6; a 
           rejection of God to reign over them.
        2. Hosea 13 :11 “Give a king in anger…took him away 
           in wrath.”
 IV. What does it mean to walk with God?
     A. Example of some who did walk with God.
        1. Abel. Heb. 11:4
        2. Abraham. Romans 4; James 2; Hebrews 11
        3. Job.  Job 2:7-10
        4. Paul. 2 Timothy 4:4-8
     B. Example of some who did not walk with God!
        1. Cain. Genesis 4
        2. Nadab and Abihu. Leviticus 10:1-3
     C. The Christians at Jerusalem is an example of
        walking with God.
        1. Steadfast. Acts 2:42; 1 Corinthians 15:58
        2. United.
           a. “were together”. Acts 2:44
           b. “of one heart and…soul” Acts 4:32
           c. takes effort.  Ephesians 4:3
        3. Liberal Acts 2:45
        4. Zealous.
           a. Acts 2:46
           b. zeal to be based on knowledge. Romans 10:1
        5. Happy. Acts 2:46
        6. Christians to love one another to walk with God.
           1 Peter 1:22
           a. How do we know that we love the brethren? 1
              John 5:2-3
           b. Define “love”: It is not a soft, wishy-washy,
              compromising emotional experience. 1 
              Corinthians 13:1-8
              (1) Hebrews 12:5-6
              (2) example: Parents correcting children.
              (3) True love restrains, rebukes, reproofs, 
                  makes correction, and gives instructions, 
                  etc. 1 Timothy 5:20.
        7. Christians are to have a willingness to forgive 
           in order to walk with God.
           a. We are to forgive as God forgives.
           b. Matthews 6:14-15
           c. God forgives those who repent.
           d. Until 70 x 7 times. Matthew 18:21-22
     D. The church may be said to walk with God when it is
        built according to and abides in the pattern that 
        God has given.
        1. We understand that the Founder built such a
           church as would please Him.  That the Law-giver 
           inaugurated such a government as He desired, and 
           the Head directed such a work and worship as he 
           approved, as would honor Him.
        2. Build all things according to the pattern.
           Hebrews 8:1-5.
        3. Organization:
           a. Christ, Head.  Ephesians 1:22-23
           b. Each local church with its own elders and
              deacons. Acts 14:23; 20:7; Titus 1:5; 
              Philippians 1:1
        4. Work:
           a. Evangelism. Ephesians 3:10; 1 Timothy 3:15
           b. Edification. Ephesians 4:16
           c. Benevolence. 1 Timothy 5:3-4; 5:16.
        5. Worship:
           a. Sing – Ephesians 5:19; 1 Corinthians 14:15.
           b. Teach – Acts 20:7.
           c. Pray – 1 Corinthians 14:15.
           d. Give – 1 Corinthians 16:1-2, 5.
           e. Partake of the Lord’s Supper. Acts 20:7; 1
              Corinthians 11:18-30.
           f. To do these things with the right purpose and 
              with right attitude.
           g. Worship is a natural expression of a
              consecrated soul.
        6. A church thus organized, working, and
           worshipping is the fullness of Christ, Ephesians 
           1:22-23, thus walking with God.
  V. Some profess to walk with God, but are not in
     agreement with God. Matthew 7:21-23.
     A. Example of Catholics: not in agreement in
        organizations, work, work, or doctrine.
     B. Example of Protestant denominationalism.
        1. Organization – have organization for universal
           church action through central organization.
        2. Edification – teach doctrines of men.
        3. Worship – leave off and add to God’s pattern.
 VI. Some who walked with God ceased walking with God.
     A. Adam – Genesis 3.
     B. King Saul – 1 Samuel 15.
     C. Ananias and Sapphira – Acts 5:1-10.
     D. The five foolish virgins. Matthew 25:1-13
     E. Warnings against apostasy.
        1. 1 Corinthians 10:12
        2. 1 Timothy 4:1
     F. The devil approaches through: (1) the lust of flesh 
        (2) lust of the eye (3) pride (vainglory) of life, 
        1 John 2:16 – to cause one to lust that he might be 
        led to sin.
     G. The Lord’s people are to be a separate people. 2 
        Corinthians 6:14-18
        1. Yet, many want to mix with the world and seem to 
           think it will not hurt them.
        2. A man cannot be carnally minded and spiritually
           minded at the same time.
     H. Solomon gives us an interesting statement on this
        subject. Proverbs 6:27-28
        1. Example of Balaam – Numbers 22:18; went with
           Balak’s men. Numbers 22:21, 36; 31:16.
        2. Lot pitched his tent toward Sodom: He took as it
           were all the wickedness of Sodom into his bosom.             
           Lot lost his wife and committed incest with 
           daughters.
        3. Israel took into its bosom a king to be like the
           nations.  Ended in idolatry, division of 
           kingdom, Assyrian captivity and Babylonian 
           captivity.
        4. The church took into its bosom a missionary
           society over 100 plus years ago.  Ended in 
           complete apostasy and division.
