THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST
Text: Acts 1:9-11
Introduction:
I. As our text shows, the Scriptures teach that one day
Jesus Christ will come back.
II. When He comes back:
A. What will happen and
B. What response should this produce in our lives?
III. Let us now turn to the Scriptures and see what they
say.
Body:
I. When Jesus comes, at least five things (events) will
take place.
A. All the dead will arise.
1. John 5:28-29
2. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 (Only about the
righteous dead, not the wicked)
3. Revelations 20:12-14
B. All will appear before the judgment seat of Christ.
1. 2 Corinthians 5:10 (The day of judgment is the
time when the sentence is declared; it is not
designed to be a day of determining one’s destiny
because that will have already been determined by
the life one lived.)
2. Hebrews 9:27
3. Acts 17:31
4. Matthew 7:22-23 (chance to present your case…)
5. Jude 15 (The ungodly will be convicted of their
ungodly deeds.)
6. Matthew 25:31-46 (Read v. 31-32)
C. The wicked will be punished.
1. 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 (destruction – means, not
the destruction of being but of well-being, not
annihilation, the putting an end to the existence
of a person or thing, but its ruin so far as the
purpose of its existence is concerned – Hogg &
Vine)
2. Matthew 25:41, 46
3. Mark 9:43-48
4. Revelation 20:15, 21:8
D. The righteous will be with the Lord in Heaven.
1. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17
2. Matthew 25:35, 46
3. Revelation 21:4
E. This world and all that is in the world will be
burned up. 2 Peter 3:10
II. The response that this should produce in our lives:
A. Study
1. We will be judged by the word of God.
a. John 12:48
b. Revelation 20:12
2. Since we are going to be judged by the Bible, we
need to know what it says. (So the need for daily
Bible study)
B. Do God’s will. Matthew 7:21
1. Watch our speech.
a. Matthew 12:36-37
b. Colossians 3:8; 4:6; Ephesians 4:25, 31; 5:3-
4; James 3
2. Watch our thoughts.
a. Galatians 5:20
b. Colossians 3:8
c. Matthew 5:28
d. Matthew 15:19-20
3. Love
a. John 15:12-13
b. John 13:34-35
c. Colossians 3:14
d. Matthew 5:43-47
e. Romans 12:9-10
4. Help the needy.
a. James 1:27
b. Matthew 25:31-46.
C. Be prepared.
1. We don’t know when He will come.
a. 2 Peter 3:10
b. Luke 12:39-40
2. James 5:8
3. We are awaiting His coming. 1 Thessalonians 1:10
a. “To await” – it means to look forward to with
patience and confidence.
b. It implies being ready for His return.
c. When you await a visitor, you have prepared
everything for his coming. You have arranged
the guest-room, the program of activities,
your time and your other duties, and all this
in such a manner that the visitor will feel
perfectly at home.
Conclusion: Are you ready for the second coming of Christ? If not,
you need to need to start preparing for it today. You need to
believe that Jesus is the Christ. Then your faith in Christ, leads
you to repent (change your mind about the kind of life that you will
lead). Your repentance leads to you to confess your faith in Christ.
Then upon your confession of Christ, then you should be baptized into
Christ.
