Chart #19A Covenant - (According to Mr. Thurmon)
- "Simply means a contract, or an agreement." (Tract, p. 58-61)
- Between two or more parties. [God and People]
- Basis of agreement:;
- God's Part: Keep 10 commandments - be a treasure, etc.
- People's Part: Promised to keep them.
- Covenant sealed and made valid.
- But people violated first covenant 40 days later.
- So "the covenant was broken" -- contract "made void!"
- But God promised to make a new covenant.
Chart #19B Question For Mr. Benton
Since the covenant was void within 40 days of its being made, or the new
covenant did not begin till after Jesus came, what covenant were the
Israelites under during the intervening 1500 years?
(1) Not the old - It was void! (According to Mr. Benton)
(2) Not the new - It had not been given!
In fact, Mr. Benton says that the new covenant has not yet been given.
(If the Covenant is only an agreement, the when one of the parties breaks the
agreement is broken and thus no longer in force. Israel violated the
covenant within 40 days. Hence, the covenant became void within 40 days.)
Chart #20 The Second Covenant
- Is the New Testament. Hebrews 8:13; 9:15
- Is not according to the First Covenant. Hebrews 8:8-9
- Was dedicated with the blood of Christ. Hebrews 9:11-12
- Its Tabernacle is not made with hands. Hebrews 8:2; 9:11
- Was established after "First" was taken away. Hebrews 10:9
- Remains. 2 Corinthians 3:11
- No Sabbath requirement!!
Chart #20A According to Mr. Benton's argument last night, he thinks we are
not yet under the "New Covenant".
But, he thinks we are:
- Under the Christ of the New Covenant.
- Under the Sacrifice of the New Covenant.
- Under the Mediator of the New Covenant.
- Under the Blood of the New Covenant.
- Under the Salvation of the New Covenant.
- Under the Priesthood of the New Covenant.
- Under the Spiritual Circumcision of the New Covenant.
- Under the Lord's Supper of the New Covenant.
