Chart #60
The Law of Liberty - #2
- The Royal Law and the Law of Liberty cannot be the 10 Commandment law.
A. My opponent assumes that which he cannot prove.
- What liberty does the 10 commandments give?
- Can my opponent keep them perfectly?
- Are there any in this audience tath can keep them perfectly?
A. The only person who could keep these and/or other parts of the law
perfectly was Jesus.
- But when my opponent offends in one point he is guilty of all and numbered
as a transgressor. See also Galatians 3:10.
- Which one of the 10 commandments offers a plan for forgiveness (or
liberty) from this sin?
A. The blood of bulls and goats could not take away sin. Hebrews 10:4
B. Animal sacrifices and atonement under the old Covenant could only look
forward to the shedding of the blood of Christ. Hebrews 9:15
- The only law that gives liberty or freedom from sin is the Law of Christ
or the gospel, dedicated by the blood of Christ. Hebrews 9:11-23
- Christ, through His shed blood and the gospel, also redeems (gives
liberty) from the curse of the law, (Galatians 3:10-13), that we might
receive the adoption of sons. Galatians 4:4-5
- "The royal law", "the law of liberty", is the law of
God through Christ. "God has spoken to us today through His
Son." Hebrews 1:1-2
Chart #62 Not One Jot or TIttle Shall Pass - Matthew 5:17-19
- Jesus did not say what my opponent thinks he said.
A. He thinks Jesus said: "I am come, not to fulfill, but to perpetuate
the law."
B. He thinks that Jesus said that as long as Heaven and earth shall stand
that every jot and tittle shall stand.
- What did Jesus actually say?
A. Christ said that none of it would pass away "till"
all be fulfilled.
1) If any of it has passed away, all of it
has passed, for none was to pass until all be fulfilled.
B. Christ is talking about both the law and the prophets. They shall
not be destroyed but they were to be fulfilled by Him. Matthew 5:17
C. The Law, from which nothing should pass until all was fulfilled, was not
just the 10 commandments. Luke 24:44; 16:16; Matthew 11:13; Acts
13:15; Galatians 3:10; Acts 7:42
1) Where does it say "not" one
jot or tittle shall pass from the 10 commandment law?
2) Again, which one of the 10
commandments was less than the others? (see verse 19)
D. This obviously then, refers to the entire law of Moses, including the 10
commandments, but also the prophets, (verse 17) and the psalms (Luke 24:44).
- If all to which He referred has not been fulfilled, then all of the Law
of Moses, or God, is binding on us today.
- Christ said that He came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets.
A. When they were fulfilled, they would pass away.
B. In John 17:4 Jesus said that He had finished the work that the Father
gave Him to do.
C. Hence, Jesus fulfilled the Law and the Prophets.
D. Therefore, they are passed away.
