Chart #57
The 10 Commandments Were a Complete Law.
Argument:
- When God spake the 10 Commandments "He added no more."
Deuteronomy 5:22
- Any other laws were different, separate laws - No part of that spiritual
Law - It is complete in itself.
But:
- The Expression "He added no more" has not one thing to do with
the overall content of the Sinaitic Covenant, which had as its basis the 10
Commandments.
- This does not say that God added no more to the covenant than the 10
Commandments.
- This simply teaches that God spoke only that which was contained on the
two tablets unto the entire assembly.
- The remainder of the covenant, including the other laws, statues and
ordinances, was mediated through Moses, rather than spoken directly to the
people.
- All that was spoken at Mt. Sinai, either directly to the people or
mediately through Moses was all spoken by God and constituted one law.
- 2 Chronicles 33:8 says that "all" the commandments were given by
God through Moses.
- See Exodus 24:3-8.
- See Hebrews 9:18-21.
Chart #58 The Ten Commandments Alone Were Never Called "the
Law of God."
- The 10 Commandments are a part of the Law of God, but are not "the
Law."
- Luke 2:22-24, 39.
A. Luke uses the expression "Law of Moses" and "Law of
God" to refer to the same thing.
B. The Law regarding sacrifices is said to the "the Law of the
Lord".
C. The Bible makes no distinction between the "Law of Moses" and
the "Law of the Lord".
- Paul said the "Law" contained both the 10 Commandments and other
parts of the Law. Romans 13:8-10
A. The "Law" contains:
1) Thou shalt not commit adultery - #7
2) Thou shalt not kill - #6
3) Thou shalt not steal - #8
4) Thou shalt not bear false witness - #9
5) Thou shalt not covet - #10
6) Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.
B. Paul joins there together as one law. Yet #6 is not one of the 10
Commandments. Leviticus 19:18
- Jesus also said the "Commandments" contained both the 10
Commandments and other parts of the Law. Matthew 16:22
A. The "Law" contains:
1) Thou shalt do no murder - #6
2) Thou shalt not commit adultery - #7
3) Thou shalt not steal - #8
4) Thou shalt not bear false witness - #9
5) Honor thy father and thy mother - #5
6) Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.
B. Again Jesus lists these as being one law, but #6 is not one of the 10
Commandments. Leviticus 19:18
My opponents distinction between the 10 Commandments and the Law of Moses is
arbitrary, presumptuous and totally without Scriptural Authority.
Chart #59 The Law of Liberty - James 1:25; 2:8-12
Argument:
- The Royal Law and the Law of Liberty are same.
- The Royal Law and/or the Law of Liberty is the 10 Commandment Law. verse
11
But:
- Though the Royal Law and the Law of Liberty are the same, they cannot be
the 10 Commandment Law.
A. My opponent assumes that which he cannot prove.
- The Royal Law teaches "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself."
1:8
A. Would my opponent please tell this audience which of the 10 Commandments
teach this? "None."
- This is one of the two greatest commandments of the Law. Matthew 22:35-40
A. But it is not one of the 10 Commandments.
- This is found in Leviticus 19:18 in that portion of the Scripture which my
opponent says is the Law of Moses and nailed to the cross.
A. Is the entire 19th chapter of Leviticus binding today? If not, why
not?
B. My opponent's argument would bind the entire Old Testament Law for
"The Law" does not refer just to the 10 Commandments.
C. The Royal Law, the Law of Christ, the Gospel teaches this, as does the
Old Testament Law.
1) In fact, Jesus, in the gospel, not only teaches
this same great principle, but enlarges upon it. Matthew 5:43-48; Luke
10:25-
- James was condemning the respecting of persons and said that those who did
it were convinced of the Law as transgressors.
A. Where do the 10 Commandments teach that to respect persons is to commit
sin and transgress the Law?
- Christ is our King today, with all authority, and His word to us in the
New Covenant is the Royal Law which we follow. Matthew 18:18; John 12:48; 1
Corinthians 15:24-25
- The Law of Liberty (James 2:12), which makes us free (Romans 8:1-2), is
the word of Christ (John 1:17; 8:32; 12:48-), and not the Old Testament Law
which would bring us into bondage. (Galatians 4:21-31; 5:1-4).
