Chart #40 A Look at Mark 2:27
- This text does not say the Sabbath was made for all mankind, all nations,
all flesh, or all the world.
A. The word "all" is not in the text of Mark 2:27
- "Man" of the text is determined by the context.
A. Vs. 24:26: Pharisees, David, Abiathar, Priests
- This text does not say the Sabbath was made for man "from the
beginning" as was marriage. (Matthew 19:4)
- There is not another one of the 10 Commandments which had to be made.
- Which of the 10 Commandments, other than the Sabbath is lower than man -
subject to being set aside under certain circumstances?
- For example, when or under what circumstances, can man worship Baal, make
graven images, take the name of God in vain, dishonor Father and Mother,
kill, commit adultery, steal, bear false witness, and covet, without being
held guilty.
- Man's life is not above God's holy and moral laws.
- Yet, Jesus taught that there were some things superior to the rigid
enforcement of the Sabbath. Matthew 12:3-12
Chart #41 A Look at Mark 2:27 and Matthew 12:3-12
1. The Sabbath was made for man.
A. Hence it was only man’s servant.
B. Man was superior to the Sabbath.
2. Notice the cases Jesus used to illustrate His statement.
A. David went to the Priest and ate Holy Bread which the Law
forbade to any but priests. His needs were superior to
that precept.
B. The priests in the Temple profane the Sabbath and are
blameless. vs. 5. They would slay cattle all the Sabbath
day. Their service was superior to the Sabbath.
C. If a sheep fell into a pit on the Sabbath they would work
hard to get him out. The preservation of animal life was
superior to the Sabbath. Jesus himself being the Judge,
the observance of the strict letter of the Sabbath Law is
not a matter of the highest importance. This is the
lesson plainly taught here by Christ, the Lord of the
Sabbath.
D. The Sabbath was made for man, hence, the necessities of
men are above the Sabbath Law.
