Chart #36

How Was the Sabbath Day to be Observed?

  1. Do no work.  Exodus 31:13-17; 20:8-11
  2. Not to gather food, nor to bake or boil food. Exodus 16:23-26
  3. Remain in his place. Exodus 16:29
  4. Not kindle a fire. Exodus 25:1-3
  5. Not pick up sticks. Numbers 15:32-35
  6. Bear no burden. Jeremiah 17:21-22
  7. Not sell or buy. Nehemiah 13:15-21
  8. A Holy convocation. Leviticus 23:3
  9. Sacrifice two lambs and two tenth deals of flour mingled with oil. Numbers 28:9-10
  10. Offer burnt sacrifices. 1 Chronicles 23:7-31
  11. Violators to be put to death. Exodus 31:14-15; 35:1-2

If the Sabbath observance is binding upon people today, then also is the method of observing the Sabbath binding.

Likewise the death penalty for violating the Sabbath would be binding.

I know of no one today who professes to keep the Sabbath who keeps it as God commanded it to be kept.

Chart #38 - Life of a Sheep - Matthew 12:11

The Law required cessation from labor on the Sabbath Day, but when the life of a sheep was in jeopardy on the Sabbath day, Jesus declared that the life of that sheep was of more value than the observance of the Sabbath.

Daniel 3.

Some of God's children were commanded to worship an idol.

To have done so would have conflicted with "thou shalt have no other gods before me".

To refuse to worship the idol meant, and to have done so would have broken the command of God.

One must yield, and of course the less to the greater.

They refused to worship the idol, showing that the life of man was less than the command.

But when then the life of a sheep was in danger on the Sabbath, Jesus said it was right to break the Sabbath that the life of the sheep might be saved.

Thus he shows that the life of a sheep was greater than the observance of the Sabbath.

  1. The life of a sheep was greater than the observance of the Sabbath.
  2. The life of man was not greater than the First Commandment.
  3. As the life of man is superior to the life of a sheep; yet inferior to the First Commandment; so the First Commandment is superior to the Fourth Commandment.
