Covenant - n. 1. an agreement between two or more persons to do or refrain from doing some; a compact; a contract.  2. an incidental clause of agreement in such an agreement.  3. Eccles. a solemn agreement between the members of a church, as that they will act together in harmony with the precepts of the gospel.  4. (sap?) one of certain bonds of agreement signed by the Scottish Presbyterians for the defense or promotion of their religion esp. the National Covenant of 1638 or the Solemn League and Covenant of 1643 (entered into with England). 5. (in Biblical usage) the agreement or engagement of God with man as set forth in the Old and New Testament.  6. Law, a. a format agreement of legal validity, esp. one under seal.  b. an early English form of action in suits involving sealed contracts.  7. Covenant: n. 1a. an agreement that is usu. formal, solemn, and intended as binding: compact <international law, which depends upon the sanctity of ~$ between rulers - G. H. Covenant 1. a binding and solemn agreement by two or more persons, parties, etc. to do or keep form doing some specified thing; a contract; compact. 2. in theology, the promises of God to man, usually carrying with them conditions to be fulfilled by man, as recorded in the Bible. 3. a solemn agreement between the members of the church, that they will hold to points of doctrine, faith, etc. 4. in law, (a) a writing, under seal, containing the terms of agreement or contract between parties; also, a clause containing a subordinate agreement or stipulation in a deed or other sealed instrument; (b) a suit claiming damages for breach of contract under seal.  5.
