THE RATIFICATION OF THE LAW OF MOSESText: Exodus 24:1-11 Introduction:
I. Two weeks ago in studying Genesis 3, we saw sin enter
into the world and the results.
II. Last week in studying Genesis 12, we saw the beginning
of the God's plan for the eternal cure for sin.
III. Today, we will be looking at another key passage of the
Old Testament, Exodus 24:1-11.Body:
I. The context. Exodus 19-23
A. The children of Israel come to Mt. Sinai. 19:1-2
B. Moses goes up the mountain. 19:3-6.
C. Moses gives a report: 19:7-8
1. To the people.
2. Then to the LORD.
D. God's instructions to Moses. 19:9-15
E. The LORD's descent on Mt. Sinai. 19:16-25.
F. God speaks to:
1. the people. 20:1f.
2. Moses II. The type of Covenant.
A. The definition of covenant.
B. Two types of covenants.
1. Unilateral.
2. Bilateral.
C. The covenant
1. Bilateral.
2. Contrast with the covenant with Abraham.
3. The New Covenant is a bilateral covenant.
D. The job of the Old Testament prophets was to remind the
children of Israel that this was a bilateral covenant.
(They placed their trust in the covenant with Abraham
and forgot their covenant).III. Lessons from Exodus 24.
A. The ratification of the covenant. 24:1-8
1. The children of Israel agree to keep the covenant.
24:3, 7
a. Notice what happen within 40 days.
b. How many of them entered into the promised land?
c. Parallel with when we become Christians.
2. The actual ratification. (This is the reason why it
is a key passage and not Exodus 20.)
a. 24:4-8
b. The New Covenant
(1) Hebrews 9:18-20
(2) Matthew 26:28
c. Don't want to mix the blood of animals and Christ.
B. The seeing of God and the eating in the presence of God.
24:9-11
1. The ones who took part.
a. Moses, Aaron, etc.
b. These partook as representative for the rest of the
nation.
c. Yet, notice what happen to:
(1) Aaron - built golden calf.
(2) His sons - offered strange fire.
(3) Moses and the elders - didn't enter into the
promise land.
2. Seeing God and eating in His presence.
a. without harm. Exodus 19:12-13
b. they had fellowship with God.
3. This foreshadowed the:
a. The Lord's Supper. Matthew 26:29
