LET US…” (INTRODUCTION)

Text: Hebrews 10:19-25
Introduction:
 I. This is the first of series of lessons on this passage.
II. Purpose is to bring us to a greater appreciation of
    this text.
Body:
 I. Verses 19-20
    A. The context: verses 15-18.
       1. Under the Law of Moses, the offerings were
          numerous, and were perpetually made.
       2. Day of Atonement. Leviticus 16. It was the
annual day of atonement when the High Priest
offered sacrifices for the sins for the sins of
nation. It was instituted in recognition of
man’s inability to offer full atonement for his
          sins. It’s ritual was this:
          a. The High Priest sanctified himself by a
ceremonial bath and putting white garments.
          b. He made atonement for himself and the other
             priests by sacrificing a bullock.
          c. A goat was chosen by lot for a sin offering
and sacrificed before the congregation; blood
from the bullock first and then the goat was
sprinkled on and about the mercy seat after
             the Holy of Holies was sanctified by incense;
a scapegoat was sent into the wilderness after
having the sins of the children of Israel laid
upon him; the high priest changed his
garments, after a second ceremonial bath, and
             made the final offering.
       3. But with the offering of Christ on the cross,
etc., there is the complete forgiveness of sins
and there is no more need for a sacrifice.
    B. Verse 19 (all can)
       1. Boldness toward God. 1 John 3:21-22
          a. Boldness is conditional
          b. If our heart condemns us not.
          c. Our heart condemns not if we are keeping His
             commandments. 1 John 3:33, Matthew 7:21;
             Hebrews 5:12
       2. Enter into the holiest.
          a. now to approach the throne of grace.
          b. and after the day of Judgment, Heaven itself.
       3. By the blood of Christ.
          a. The priest could enter only with blood, so
there is now no other way.
          b. Jesus is the door (John 10:9) of the church,
             of heaven itself.
          c. Romans 6:3; 1 John 1:7-9
    C. Verse 20
       1. We have a dedicated Way dedicated by Jesus.
          a. Jesus is the way. John 14:6
          b. Christ’s way can be a persecuted way. Acts 9:2
          c. Acts 19:9, 23
          d. Acts 24:14; Hebrews 9:15-17
       2. The new and living Way is in contrast to the old
          way.
          a. It is a way prepared by a living Savior, in
contrast to the lifeless pavement trodden by
             the high priest.
          b. It is a new way (one that was recently
             disclosed) (constantly new, doesn’t decay).
          c. It is a living way because:
             (1) It is a way that conducts to life.
             (2) It is every lasting –as if the blood which
was shed always retained the freshness of
that which is flowing from the vein.
             (3) It is perpetual and constant – like a
fountain that always flows – for it is by
a sacrifice whose power is perpetual and
                 constant.
          d. We attain it by being a living and sacrifice.
             Romans 12:1.
       3. Through the veil, that is to say his flesh.
          a. The way to heaven was open means or through
the medium of the flesh of Jesus; that is of
his body sacrificed for sin, as the most holy
place in the temple was entered by the means
or through the medium of the veil.
          b. The ideal is that just as under the Law of
Moses, there was a medium of access by the
veil to God; there is by the flesh of Jesus a
             medium of access to God.
II. Verse 21 (A High Priest)
    A. The Old Testament High Priest.
       1. The family.
          a. The first one was Aaron, the brother of Moses.
          b. After his death, his descendants became the
             high priest.
       2. His duties.
          a. The regular duties of a priest, plus:
          b. The Day of Atonement
          c. He must offer the regular meal offering.
    B. Our High Priest.
       1. Hebrews 3:1 – Jesus Christ is our High Priest.
       2. Hebrews 5:10; 7:1-2 (a Priest and a King at the
          same time)
       3. Hebrews 8:1-4 (7:14)
       4. 1 Timothy 2:5
    C. “Over the house of God.” 1 Timothy 3:15
Conclusion:
  I. Having, if we are living a righteous life, boldness
     toward God.
II. And we have a High Priest
III. Therefore, let us ______.
     A. Draw near to God.
     B. Hold fast to the profession of our faith.
