Jesus Is the Christ

Last week we noticed that Saul of Tarsus, who became the Apostle Paul, was an example of one who had deceived himself into thinking that he should do things which were diametrically opposed to God’s Will. Acts 26:9. He thought that Jesus was an imposter. He did not accept the idea that He was the Son of God until the Lord appeared to him on the road to Damascus. One excellent thing which can be said of Saul, however, is that when he learned that Jesus was the Christ, he was no longer disobedient. Acts 26:13-19. Jesus said, "Why call ye me Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say." Luke 6:46. When we today learn that Jesus was indeed the Christ, The Son of God, we are under heavens obligation to be obedient.

There are so many ways that we may know that Jesus was and is the Son of God that there is no excuse for being deceived into thinking that He was not the Christ, the Son of the Living God. The circumstances surrounding His death on the Cross were sufficient to create belief. Matthew 27:45, 50-54 tells us that when Christ was crucified; 1) There was darkness over the earth for three hours; 2) The veil of the Temple was rent from top to bottom; 3) There was a great earth quake; 4) So much so that the rocks were rent; 5) The graves were opened and many of those who were the Lord’s disciples were raised from the dead and came forth from the grave after the Lord was raised from the dead. "Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earth quake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God." Matthew 27:54.

The greatest miracle demonstrating that Jesus was the Christ the Son of God, however, was the Lord’s own resurrection from the dead. Paul said that He was "declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:" Romans 1:4. Christ had prophesied that He would be raised from the dead. John 2:18-22; 10:17-18; Luke 18:31-33; Acts 2:25-32. Jesus demonstrated His power over death and His power to take again His own life from the dead, John 10:17-18, in that He raised the daughter of Jairus from the dead. Mark 5:38-40. He also raised the Son of the Widow of Nain, Luke 7:11-16, and Lazarus, John 11:43. Matthew 28:1-15 records for us the fact of His resurrection. After Jesus had appeared unto Mary Magdalene and the men in white apparel at the tomb told the women that Jesus had risen, the disciples came and found the tomb empty. The Chief Rulers recognized that the tomb was empty and that Jesus’ body was not there. This is evidenced by their giving the soldiers, who were guarding the tomb, great sums of money to say that the disciples of Jesus came and stole away the body of Jesus. Matthew 28:11-15. The tomb was empty. Jesus had been raised from the dead. He was thereby declared to be the Son of God. Thus, why call him "Lord, Lord, and do not the things which He says."
