Israel's Passover and Ours

Text: Exodus 12:3-14.
Body:
 I. Israel's Passover.
    A. The children of Israel that this time in history 
       was in Egyptian bondage (they were slaves).
    B. To force Pharaoh to free Israel, God sent a series 
       of plagues.  The first nine were:
       1. Turning water into blood.
       2. Land being over run with frogs.
       3. Lice.
       4. Swarms of flies.
       5. A pestilence on the livestock in the field which 
          resulted in the death of the livestock.
       6. Boils on livestock and man.
       7. Very heavy hail.
       8. Locusts that devoured the crops.
       9. Pitch black darkness over the land.
    C. The tenth plague.
       1. Death was to come upon all the firstborn in the 
          land of Egypt. Exodus 11:4-6.
       2. God's grace provided a means whereby the firstborn 
          of Israel would be spared.
       3. They had to take a lamb.  Exodus 12:3.
          a. It had to be a male, one year old. Exodus 12:5.
          b. It had to be without blemish.  Exodus 12:5.
          c. It was to be selected before hand. Exodus 12:3, 6.
       4. The lamb was killed; however, not a bone was to be 
          broken. Exodus 12:6, 46.
       5. The blood of the lamb was to be put on the "side posts 
          and on the upper door post." Exodus 12:7, 22.
       6. All the firstborn in Egypt that was not protected 
          by the blood died. Exodus 12:29-30; 23.
    D. The children of Israel were to keep a feast each year 
       as a memorial of what God did for them. Exodus 12:8-10, 
       14.
II. Our Passover.
    A. People are slaves to sin.  Romans 6:16-17.
    B. The wages of sin is death.  Romans 6:23.
    C. God through His grace has provided a means of escape. 
       Ephesians 2:8-9.
    D. Jesus is our Lamb.
       1. Scriptures:
          a. John 1:36.
          b. 1 Corinthians 5:7.
       2. He was young (only about 33 years old).
       3. He was without blemish.
          a. 1 Peter 1:19; 2:22.
          b. 2 Corinthians 5:21 ("He who knew no sin...").
       4. He was selected before hand.
    E. He died and not a bone was broken.
       1. Romans 5:8; Hebrews 9:22; 10:19.
       2. John 19:31-36.
    F. We have the blood applied to us.
       1. Romans 6:3-4.
       2. 1 John 1:7.
    G. All who are not protected by the blood of Christ will 
       be lost.  Revelation 20:15.
    H. We have a feast to keep as a memorial for what Jesus 
       has done for us.  1 Corinthians 11:23-26.
