Chart 6 Gifts of the Holy Spirit

1. Jesus Christ received the spirit without measure. John 3:34
2. Only Christ baptized with the Holy Spirit. John 1:33
     A. The Apostles were baptized with Holy Spirit by Christ and not man.
          (1)   A limited gift of the Spirit as compared to Christ.
          (2)   Acts 2:1-4
          (3)   “Ye shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” Acts 1:5
     B. House of Cornelius was baptized with Holy Spirit by Christ, not man.
          (1) Acts 11:17
3. Only Apostles could impart miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit by laying on of hands.
   Acts 8:14-18
    A. A limited gift of the Spirit as compared to the baptism of the Spirit received by the
        
Apostles.
    B. Samaritans—“Simon saw that through laying on of Apostles hands the Holy Spirit
        was given…” Acts 8:16-18.
         (1)   Not Holy Spirit baptism because only Christ could administer Holy Spirit
               baptism.
    C. 12 Disciples—“When Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came
         upon them.” Acts 19:6
    D. Paul desired to impart some spiritual gift to Christians at Rome. Romans 1:11

    E. Those who received Holy Spirit by laying on of the Apostles hands could work
         miracles.  Stephen—Acts 6:6; Philip—Acts 8.
    F. But they could not impart the Holy Spirit to others by the laying on of their hands.
        Acts 8:14-18 

Question: If every Christian received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, why was it necessary for the apostles to lay hands on them to impart miraculous gifts of the Spirit?

Since every Christian did not receive Holy Spirit Baptism, down goes my opponents’ position.

4. Christians today receive the general or ordinary, non-miraculous indwelling gift of the
    Holy Spirit promised to all Christians.
    A.     Acts 2:38 – Those who repent and are baptized.
    B.     Acts 5:32 – Them that obey Him.
    C.     Galatians 4:4-6 – Because we are sons.
    D.     Romans 8:9-11 – Those who are Christ’s.
    E.      1 Corinthians 6:19 – Body the temple of the Holy Spirit.
5. Christians today do not receive the Holy Spirit without measure as Christ.
6. Christians today do not receive the Holy baptism as the Apostles.
7. Christians do not receive the Holy Spirit by laying on of the Apostles hands, as there
    are no Apostles living on earth to lay hands upon them.
