Christ In the FleshIn Hebrews 2:14 the apostle said, "Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;". "For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil." 1 John 3:8 It was absolutely essential that Jesus Christ come to this earth in the flesh, suffer and die that He might overcome and destroy the power and influence of the devil. Christ took away the power of the devil over death, by His own resurrection from the dead. By His resurrection, He has given us assurance that there will be a resurrection and that we too will be resurrected. (Please read 1 Corinthians 15:12-21) In being put to death, Christ was not defeated, but rather He triumphed over Satan. This was according to God’s eternal purpose. Colossians 2:15 Jesus had said "I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." Matthew 16:18 Jesus here indicates that He will die and His spirit will go into hell (the hadean realm or the place of the departed spirits). His death, however, will not prevent Him doing that which He came to this world to do. Thus we are told that when He was raised and ascended into heave that He led captivity captive and gave gifts unto men. Ephesians 4:8-9 Christ also came to this world to demonstrate how the Father wants his people to live. "For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:" 1 Peter 2:21-22 Paul said: "For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;" Titus 2:11-12 Many passages are given to let us know what is involved in living soberly, righteously, and godly. It was also necessary that Christ come in the flesh and suffer in order that He might be a faithful high priest. "Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted." Hebrews 2:17-18 Again, "For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need." Hebrews 4:15-16 What a marvelous thing God had done for us in sending His Son into the world to suffer and die in our stead. May God help us to show our appreciation and love for God for what He has done for us by giving our lives in obedience to His will. Howard See |
