The Nation of Israel -- The Natural Branches.  Romans 11:17-22

  1. All agree that Israel as a nation made up of the people of God under the old law.
  2. God said through Jeremiah: "My people have forgotten me days without number. Jeremiah 2:32
  3. David said: "The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God. Psalms 9:17
  4. Israel had forgotten God ways without number, thus would be turned into hell.
  5. In Jeremiah 3:6-8 we read, "Hast thou seen that which backsliding Israel hath done?  She is gone up upon every high mountain and under every Green tree, and there hath played the harlot...and I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put away, and given her a bill of divorce."  SO GOD SAYS CONCERNING ISRAEL!
  6. God further told the sinning nation that if they should "forsake God" he would also "forsake" them.  2 Chronicles; ...and that sinful nation would be "cast off forever." 1 Chronicles 28:9
  7. These natural branches were indeed broken off because of their unbelief (disobedience).  Romans 11:20; Hebrews 3:18-19
  8. Christians are admonished not to fall "after the same example of unbelief." Hebrews 4:11

The case of King Saul -- A Natural Branch. Romans 11:17-22

  1. 1 Samuel 10: Verse one states that he was "anointed" of God.
                            Verse six states that he became "another man."
                            Verse nine states that he had "another heart."
                            Verse seven states that God was with him.
                            Verse ten states that "God's spirit was in him."
                            Verse twenty-four states that he was "God's chosen."
  2. 1 Samuel 15: Tells of his sins of rebellion, stubbornness and disobedience.
  3. 1 Samuel 28:16 Samuel tells Saul that "the Lord is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy."
  4. Thus being rejected by the Lord, Chapter 31 tells us how Saul killed himself as an outcast from God almighty.

ELECTION DOES NOT UNCONDITIONALLY SECURE ETERNAL LIFE. 1 Peter 1:2

  1. Peter writes a second letter to the same ELECT PERSONS.  "This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both with I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance."
  2. Being elect they "have obtained like precious faith with US. 2 Peter 1:1
  3. Are partakers of the divine nature. 2 Peter 1:4
    Have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of...Jesus Christ.  2 Peter 2:20
  4. Although ELECT they MAY AGAIN BE ENTANGLED THEREIN (i.e., in the pollutions of the world) and BE OVERCOME.  2 Peter 2:20
  5. THE LATTER END IS WORSE WITH THEM THAN THE BEGINNING.  2 Peter 2:20

Their apostasy was compared to the proverb of the dog returning to his own vomit and the sow that washed to her wallowing in the mire.
