Chart #38 Romans 8:29-30
Five
predicates in the past tense all affirmed of one and the same class.
- "Glorified" cannot apply to any living person in the flesh.
a. John 7:39 - "Jesus was not yet glorified.
b. John 17:1 - "Glorify thy Son."
c. 1 Timothy 3:16 - "Received up in glory."
d. Even here in Romans 8:17-19 Paul shows that the Christians glorification
is yet future.
- My opponents position would have Christians "glorified" already
while here in the flesh.
a. Paul said it was yet future. Romans 8:17-19
b. I had rather take Paul.
- These were predestinated to bear the image of Christ.
a. Christians will bear the image of Christ when resurrected, 1 Corinthians
15:47-49; 1 John 3:2, and glorified.
- This then cannot be a proof text for my opponent's position.
Chart # 38-B Romans 8:29-30 (Continued)
All
of these predicates must either be received in their simple past tense, or
if you make one of them to mean something that God did or would do "in
purpose" then all of them must be taken as referring to something
"in purpose".
- Here in Verses 29 and 30 Paul talks about the whole
"glorification."
- The persons to whom he refers are no longer in the flesh, "they have
been glorified," if these are taken in the past tense.
- Hence, these have apparently been resurrected, if these are taken in
the past tense.
- This was done that Christ might be first born among many brethren.
a. He is the first born in glory and from the grave. Colossians 1:18
b. They were not perfected until the provision was made in our dispensation.
Hebrews 11:39-40; 9:15; 12:18-23; 9:11-12
- Many arose after His resurrection. Matthew 27:52-53
- Paul is applying God's dealings with His people in time past to those who
are suffering in a similar way now.
a. This is re-affirmation of verse 18 - "the sufferings of the present
time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in
us." (See also Hebrews 6:10-11; 12:1-2)
- Thus, Paul here proves the statement in verse 28 that "all things
work together for good to them that love God." by showing
the blessings conferred upon those who were faithful to Him in ages past.
