Being Chosen to Salvation Does Not Guarantee Eternal Life. 2 Thessalonians 2:13

Those Chosen Were Elect of God (1 Thessalonians 1:4)  But:
Those Chosen to Salvation Were Admonished:

  1. To stand fast. 2:15
  2. To hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle. 2:15
To withdraw yourselves from every BROTHER that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us. 3:6
  3. Paul said, "We hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies." 3:11
  4. "And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed." 3:14
  5. BUT CHRIST IS THE AUTHOR OF ETERNAL SALVATION ONLY TO THOSE WHO OBEY HIS WILL.  Hebrews 5:8-9

Chart #11

The Seal of the Holy Spirit Does Not Guarantee Eternal Life. Ephesians 1:13; 4:30; 2 Corinthians 1:22

A seal:
1. Guarantees genuineness.
2. Proclaims ownership.
3. Is a warrant of safety.
4. Is an impress of likeness.

  1. Paul says that the "SEAL" or the abiding presence of the Spirit in the heart is a sign that we belong to God. 2 Timothy 2:19
  2. The three blessings - the sealing, the anointing (2 Corinthians 1:21), and the earnest of the Spirit, are only different forms or representations of the work of the Spirit.
  3. If we grieve the Holy Spirit, (Ephesians 4:30) through our disobedience (Walking after the flesh rather than after the Spirit, (Romans 8:13) God will withdraw the SEAL or the abiding presence of the Spirit.
    a. Saul of Kish (first King of Israel). 1 Samuel 16:14; 28:16
    b. Church at Ephesus. Revelation 2:1-5
    c. Church at Sardis.  Revelation 3:1-5
    d. Ananias and Sapphira. Acts 5:1-11; Revelation 21:8; 22:14-15
    e. NOTE DAVID'S PRAYER. Psalms 51:11
  4. Those who are "BORN AGAIN" into the Kingdom of God receive this SEAL OF THE SPIRIT. John 3:3, 5
    a. BUT those born into the Kingdom that OFFEND AND DO INIQUITY WILL BE GATHERED OUT AND BURNED. Matthew 13:41.
  5. Paul who discusses the "SEAL OF THE SPIRIT" in these passages, being an Apostle, certainly was himself thus sealed with the Spirit.  See 2 Corinthians 1:22.  "US".
    a. But Paul had to control his body (Actions, behavior, etc.) lest he himself would be a castaway. 1 Corinthians 9:27
  6. Those who have been bought by the blood and who have escaped the pollutions of the world through their knowledge of the Lord (1 Peter 1:18-19; 2 Peter 2:20-22), "THUS THOSE WHO ARE ELECT OF GOD" (1 Peter 1:2), would certainly be SEALED WITH THE SPIRIT.
    a. Yet they may become entangled again in the things of the world and overcome.
    b. They would be worse off than before they first were made free.
    c. They would be like the dog that returned to his own vomit and the sow that was washed unto her wallowing in the mire.
  7. The only conclusion, therefore, that can be reached is that being SEALED with the Spirit cannot mean that eternal life is guaranteed.
    a. Nor can we conclude that the SEALING of the Spirit will keep us from sinning.
    b. The SEAL therefore is simply God putting his stamp of approval upon us, signifying that we are His children, and that we are partakers of His divine nature. 2 Timothy 2:19; 1 Peter 1:4
